NINE AFGHAN REFUGEES ESCAPE FROM RIAU DETENTION CENTER

Tanjungpinang, Indonesia, Sept. 10 (ANTARA) - Nine Afghan illegal immigrants escaped from the Tanjungpinang immigration detention center, Riau Island Province, in the wee hours of Thursday.

They ran away after eating their 'sahur' (meal before daybreak) at around 5 am local time, Ajat Sudrajat, head of the Riau legal and human rights office, said here on Thursday.

However, they were later recaptured in Tanjung Balai Karimun, Riau Islands, by local police and immigration officers.

The escapees were Nahim, Jawad Husaini, Zakir Husain, Ali Khan Ali Zhada, Ali Ahmad, M Medi Hazaraqi, Karim Hazara, Jawad Husaini, and Essa Ameen.

After escaping from the immigration detention center in Tajungpinang, the Afghan illegals took a ferry to Tajung Balai Karimun at about 6 am local time, according to Adjunct Commissioner Ade Kuncoro of the Tanjungpinang police office.

In addition to the nine escapees, the Tanjung Balai Karimun also arrested five other Afghan illegal immigrants who were also on board of the same ferry.

Last September 8, 2009, Riau Police have captured four out of 11 Afghan illegal immigrants who ran away from an immigration detention center in Pekanbaru last Monday night.

"This is the second time illegal immigrants have escaped from the detention center this year. In June 28, 2009, some 37 illegal immigrants from Afghanistan also ran away from this place," the center's chief, Yanizur, said in Pekanbaru on Tuesday.

According to Yanizur, most of the immigrants at the Pekanbaru immigration detention center had expressed their willingness to return to their home country. However, the process of sending them back home through the United Nation High Commissioner for Refugee (UNHCR) proved to take a long time.

"This condition has made these immigrants feel uncomfortable and this prompted them to run away ," he said.

According to the most recent data at Pekanbaru's immigration office, 40 immigrants from Afghanistan had been sent home last July 27, 2009. and Pekanbaru's immigration detention center was now only holding 41 illegal immigrants.***
