GOVT URGED TO IMPROVE DISASTER EARLY WARNING SYSTEMS` EFFECTIVENESS

Jakarta, Sept 10 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) has asked the government to heighten the readiness of its disaster early warning systems in the country in order to minimize the casualty rate of natural calamities.

Walhi Executive Director Berry Nahdian Forgan in a press statement said on Thursday in Pekanbaru that the lack of readiness of the government had caused a big number of victims in last week's earthquake which struck Tasikmalaya, West Java.

He said the government should have increased its readiness in the management of its disaster early warning system in order to minimize the number of victims.

Walhi made the statement after seeing the big number of victims which fell in the 7.3 earthquake which struck West Java's Tasikmalaya district on September 2, 2009.

In the disaster, Walhi viewed that many people had fallen victims because the government was not ready to manage the early warning system.

Therefore, Walhi asked the government to increase its alertness and readiness in managing the disaster early warning system.

He government has to give a serious attention to the ecological disaster that had hit Indonesia in several recent years.

Based on Walhi's research there were 205 ecological disasters in 2007 and 359 in 2008, an increase of 51 percent over the past two years.***
