VP: UNHAS MUST DEVELOP ITS OWN CHARACTERISTICS

Makasar, Indonesia, Sept 10 (ANTARA) - Hasanuddin University (Unhas) in Makassar, South Sulawesi, should have its own characteristics and not be a "photocopy" of other universities in the country, Vice President Jusuf Kalla said.

"Hasanuddin University should have its own characteristics like other prominent universities. Therefore, Unhas should not be a photocopy of other universities," Vice President Jusuf Kalla said at a function to mark the 53rd anniversary of the university here on Thursday.

According to vice president, the people of South Sulawesi in general have strong characteristics but tough in their will and attitude.

Such characteristics the vice president said Hasanuddin Univesity should have in order not to be inferior from other universities in the country.

He asserted that character building should be seriously made by Unhas because all noted university such as University of Indonesia (UI), Gajah Mada University (UGM), and even Harvard University in the United States have their own characteristics.

"Unhas should leave behind its primitive characteristics in the use of 'fire and stone' (fighting) to solve a problem," Kalla said.

According to the vice president, the university in South Sulawesi in the past was known from its students who used to fight and that was a primitive character all about.

Kalla said if the students of Hasanuddin University were reluctant to leave behind their fighting habits, it would be difficult for them to find a job after they graduated.

Present at the Unhas 53rd anniversary besides the vice president were among others South Sulawesi Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo, Makassar Mayor Ilham Arief Sirajuddin, and the students of the university.

After attending the observance of Unhas anniversary, the vice president and his entourage on Thursday afternoon left Hasanuddin airport for Jakarta to attend a cabinet plenary session at the Presidential Palace later in the day. ***
