Nearly half of suicide attempts linked to conflict with family, friends
SEOUL, Sept. 11 (Yonhap) -- Nearly half of all suicide attempts in South Korea are connected to conflicts with family members, spouses or friends, a survey showed Friday.
According to the poll by the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention,
such conflict-linked suicide attempts accounted for 46.5 percent of the total,
the biggest reason people sought to take their own lives.
The poll was conducted among 1,599 people who were carried off to emergency rooms
between 2006 and 2008 after trying to kill themselves, the agency said.
Unstable mental status was cited as the second biggest reason, accounting for
14.1 percent of the total.
Depression followed with 10.1 percent and health and financial problems were also
cited as major reasons for attempting suicide attempt, the report showed.
