News Focus: IDUL FITRI TRAVELERS TO ENJOY BETTER TRAVEL CONDITIONS

By Otniel Tamindael
Jakarta, Sept 11 (ANTARA) - Indonesians intending to make their traditional home-bound trip during the Muslim holiday period over the next two weeks this year are expected to enjoy more pleasant travel conditions.

More than 16 million Indonesians throughout the archipelago will be traveling back to their home towns and villages for the Idul Fitri festivity to mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan which will fall on September 21, 22 this year.

At a cabinet meeting at his office here on Thursday, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyhono asked state transportation agencies to give the best possible service the Idul Fitri holiday travelers later this month.

The head of state on the occasion said state transportation agencies should learn from past problems and enable Idul Fitri holiday-makers to travel to their home towns or villages in the most comfortable conditions possible.

"What we are going to do in terma of Idul Fitri preparations this year should not be a routine activity but a special operation that has to be successful," the head of state said.

The president said the environment continued to change and therefore the management of home-bound travelers, returning holiday makers, and everything related to the peak of the Muslim holiday period in the coming weeks should be adjusted with the real condition.

"The number of motor vehicles on the road during Idul Fitri this year will increase from those in past years and transportation problemd will be more complicated. Therefore, let us do our best to enable the people to make their holiday journeys in the most pleasant conditions possible," the president said.

He told the cabinet ministers attending the meeting at his office on Thursday afternoon that all parties should take a lesson from Idul Fitri management in the past years.

"Our target is to make the Idul Fitri festivities this year better than than those in previous years," the president said at the meeting to discuss various issues related to the latest domestic situation including preparations for the Idul Fitri cerebration.

Present at the meeting were Vice President Jusuf Kalla and all cabinet members among others Acting Coordinating Minister for Economy Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Widodo AS, Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto, Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, Industry Minister Fahmi Idris, and other ministers.

Also present were National Defense Forces (TNI) Chief Gen Djoko Santoso, National Police Chief Gen Bambang Hendarso Danuri, Attorney General Hendarman Supandji, and State Intelligence Agency (BIN) Chief Syamsir Siregar.

After the gathering, Sri Mulyani explained that various food stocks, fuel oil, infrastructure and transportation facilities, security, and even small denomination bills would be made available for the holiday travelers.

Commenting on Sri Mulyani's statement on food stocks, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said they would be sufficient until the Idul Fitri holiday because the government had sufficient staple food stocks to last until the end of the year.

"The food stocks are secure and their prices are basically stable. The prices during Idul Fitri in general will edge up by 5 to 10 percent except perishable products such as red chilies, onions, beef and chicken whose prices usually rise several days before the start of fasting month and Idul Fitri," Mari Pangestu said.

Meanwhile, Transportation Minister Jusman Syafei Dajmal predicted that more than 16 million people across the country would be traveling on their private vehicles and 11 million others would return home on motorbikes.

Commenting on transportation facilities, Jusman said all roads and bridges were under repair and they would be completed ten days before Idul Fitri at the latest.

He said transportation ministry officials were currently checking all transportation sectors for safety.

About the availability of transportation facilities across the country for Idul Fitri travelers, Jusman said there would be 34,358 buses to carry around 16.5 million passengers, 116 ferry ships with a capacity for 10.6 million people at seven crossing points, 227 trains with a capacity for 3.71 million passengers, 125 ships with 3.19 million seats, and 276 aircraft with 2.28 million seats.

"So the total capacity of 36.4 million seats will be more than sufficient to carry all the season's travelers. We will also focus on traffic regulations and management to ensure that this year's Idul Fitri exodus runs smoothly," Jusman said.

In addition, National Police Chief Gen Bambang Hendarso Danuri said he guaranteed the police were ready to step up security for holiday travelers by deploying 1,555 Mobile Brigade personnel.

The Mobile Brigade personnel would ensure security of train transportation from Bandarlampung to Kertapati in Palembang, from Merak to Manggarai, and from Jakata to East Java.

Bambang Hendarso said the police would also install 18 CCTV cameras and officers at busy locations.

"Our focus in the context of public services in relation to the seasonal activities is to ensure security at recreational places and houses left by their owners," the national police chief said.
