POLICE QUIZ ANTI-GRAFT BODY LEADERS

Jakarta, Sept 11 (ANTARA) - Police questioned as witnesses four leaders of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Thursday over alleged abuse of power in the anti-graft body, police spokesman Insp Gen Nanan Sukarna said.

"The four were questioned as witnesses, none of them as a suspect," Nanan said here on Friday. He added, however, he did not rule out the possibility that one or more suspects would be named in further investigations.

He said police had asked for explanations from the KPK leaders in light of a report from suspended KPK chairman Antasari Azhar.

Antasari Azhar had said one of the KPK leaders was involved in a bribery case when the KPK was investigating an alleged corruption case in the Forestry Ministry.

The KPK leaders are now being investigated by the Police directorate for corruption and white collar crime of the Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) of the National Police Headquarters.

They were Chandra M Hamzah, Bibit Samad Rianto, Hayono Umar and M Yasin.

The four KPK leaders came to the Bareskrim in the company of KPK spokesman Johan Budi. They refused to speak much when they were met by newsmen before they entered the Bareskrim office.

Johan Budi said that the KPK leaders were questioned as witnesses.

Asked whether anyone of them had been named a suspect, Johan said he had no idea about that. "The KPK leadership will later explain it. Right now, the questioning is still in progress," he said.

He said that police investigators based their questioning on Article 23 Law No 13 / 1999 on the Elimination of Corruption Crime, namely abuse of power.

"They are invited, including Chandra M Hamzah, as witnesses with police mentioning no suspects," he said.

On Thursday, police also examined three KPK staffers in the same case, namely KPK Investigation Director Iswan Elmi, Legal Affairs Chief Chaidir Ramly and KPK investigator Arry Widiatmoko.

Another KPK investigator, Rony Samtana, was questioned on Tusday, September 8.***
