PRESIDENT WANTS ANTI-CORRUPTION DRIVE TO CONTINUE UNDISTURBED
Jakarta, Sept 11 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhohyono is hoping the anti-corruption drive in the country will not be disturbed or weakened, his special adviser for legal affairs, Denny Indrayana, said.
Indrayana told reporters here on Friday the president was committed to continuing the efforts to fight corruption and hoping the needed coordination among different law-enforcing agencies in this respect would run well.
"Let there be no effort to weaken the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the corruption eradication agenda. If there is a legal process, whether against police officers or against whoever, let it run based on the existing evidence," Indrayana quoted the president as saying.
About the fact that KPK leaders had been summoned by police for questioning based on a report from suspended KPK chairman Antasari Azhar, he said, the president would not get involved in the legal process.
"Let the legal process run according to the rules of the game. Let the evidence speak for itself. The president cannot enter that domain but as head of state he will secure the efforts to fight corruption," Indrayana said.
On the impression that KPK - Police relations are not harmonious, the president, according to Indrayana, was not keeping silent but making efforts to improve them, for example, by holding coordination meetings to restore their communications.
"Since the beginning the president has been taking steps, including holding a coordination meeting on corruption elimination efforts where matters were clearly explained. The president understood that there was friction and miscommunication between KPK and police," Indrayana said.
He also said that on various occasions, the president had expressed a number of thoughts on corruption eradication efforts.
"There should be no effort to weaken the corruption eradication agenda, and the agenda should not be disturbed even if there are individuals, no matter who they are, who have to be prosecuted because they violated the law," the president said , according to Indrayana. ***
