RI CAN REDUCE CARBON EMISSION BY 2.3 GIGA TONS : OFFICIAL

Jakarta, Sept 11 (ANTARA) - Indonesia can reduce its carbon emission by more than 2.3 giga tons, Forestry Ministry's Climate Change Working Committee (Pokja) chairman Wandojo Siswanto said here on Friday.

Therefore, Wandojo said he would make a 'demonstration action' in relation with a preparation to apply a mechanism of Reduction Emission from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD).

"We have prepared two demonstration actions as part of Indonesia's preparation to face REDD which is to be honed further at the 15th conference of parties (COP) in Copenhagen, Denmark, on December this year," Wandojo said.

He said the demonstration actions would be conducted in Central Kalimantan under the assistance of Germany and in Berau district, East Kalimantan province, under the assistance of The Nature Conservative (TNC).

According to Wandojo, one of the purposes of the demonstration actions was to to calculate the potential of carbon stock in Indonesian forest.

Wandojo said Indonesia should be able to take the benefit from the 15th COP and to decide whether or not REDD Plus could be applied to deal with climate change in the country.

"We have to be careful lest the benefit is taken by developed countries because the strong effort to reduce carbon emission should be made by Indonesia and other developing countries," he said.

Wandojo said that in the REDD Plus, the developing countries demand of the importance of sustainable forest management and carbon stock enhancement should be reasserted.

"If the developed countries require Indonesia to apply sustainable forest management, the criteria should be clear because we have applied it," he said.

Wandojo added that Indonesia would consistently ask Annex-I countries to reduce carbon emission in a big amount and tried to have funds in the REDD.

Meanwhile, Forestry Minister MS Kaban said he was optimistic that REDD would be beneficial for Indonesia which has been able to protect its forest through various trees planting activities.

The minister said the decline in the number of critical land in Indonesia at present was inseparable from the country's effort to deal with climate change. ***
