Lawmakers upbraid military in connection with deadly N. Korean dam discharge
YEONCHEON -- A group of South Korean lawmakers chided the military Friday for
failing to alarm local authorities when North Korea opened a border dam earlier
this week, triggering a flash flood that killed six campers in the South.
The lawmakers, who belong to the parliamentary national security committee, were
visiting the Imjin river where the campers, including an eight-year-old boy, had
been swept away on Sunday morning.

Head of Korea's pension fund offers to step down
SEOUL -- The head of the nation's pension fund offered to resign Friday amid
accusations that he caused heavy losses to a state-run bank years ago when he was
its chairman.
Park Hae-choon, president of the National Pension Service (NPS), delivered his
resignation to Health Minister Jeon Jae-hee, who supervises the nation's largest
institutional investor, according to fund officials.

Flu fears spark advisory against public gatherings
SEOUL -- South Korea told its provincial and municipal governments Friday to
avoid holding public gatherings that could become breeding grounds for Influenza
A (H1N1).
The move comes amid mounting concerns that the number of type-A flu infections is
picking up speed. Five people have died due to complications linked with the
disease since it was first reported here in May.

Foreign prisoners in S. Korea number over 1,000: gov't tally
SEOUL -- The number of foreign inmates in South Korea recently surpassed 1,000,
with more than 60 percent of them having Chinese nationality, government records
showed Friday.
According to the Justice Ministry, 1,031 foreign nationals from 36 countries were
in South Korean prisons at the end of June. The largest group came from China,
totaling 667, followed by Taiwan with 125 and Mongolia with 32.

JEJU ISLAND -- To Carla Peterson, the artistic director of the New York-based
Dance Theater Workshop (DTW), dance is an art that must be approached from
various viewpoints in order to develop and promote. Networking being one of the
key elements, she considers her participation in the third International Delphic
Games "very important" as well as an "honor."
"The reason why it is so exciting to be here in Korea is that it gives me an
opportunity to learn more about the way artists work, to learn more about how
this country deals with the promotion of dancers, and to see how people interact
with me as a representative from the U.S.," the U.S. dance expert said.

(LEAD) Seoul stocks end 0.43 pct higher on foreign buying
SEOUL -- South Korean shares finished 0.43 percent higher Friday as heavy foreign
buying pulled banks and retailers higher, analysts said. The local currency rose
against the U.S. dollar for a seventh day.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) advanced 7.02 points to a
new yearly high of 1,651.7. Volume was moderate at 502 million shares worth 7.48
trillion won (US$6.12 billion) with gainers leading losers 443 to 357.
