Jakarta, Sept 14 (ANTARA) - Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said a Rp7.02 trillion rise in the 2010 defense budget will mostly be used to procure new armament system.

Speaking at a working meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission I for defense, information and foreign affairs here on Monday, Juwono said the ministry will receive a budget allocation of Rp40.7 trillion next year.

"We will allocate Rp559.8 billion of the increase for operational activities, Rp196.3 billion for education and training, Rp465.3 billion for soldiers' welfare, and Rp791.9 billion for the maintenance of armament system," he said.

The remaining Rp2,454.2 billion will be used to procure the Indonesian military (TNI)'s new armament system, he said at the meeting also attended by TNI Chief Gen. Djoko Santoso and chiefs of three forces.

The results of an audit jointly conducted by the ministry and the TNI headquarters show that the average preparedness of the TNI's weapons is only 35 percent.

The audit also suggests that the preparedness of the Army's combat vehicles reaches 61.81 percent, that of the Navy's warships 16.55 percent, and that of the Air Force's jet fighters 30.88 percent.

Therefore, Juwono added the procurement and maintenance of the armament system will be directed towards increasing the number of defense equipment and improving its condition to enable the country to carry out state defense in an integrated and sustainable way according to priority scale.
