BRITAIN FULLY SUPPORTS PAPUA'S INTEGRATION WITH NKRI

Jayapura, Sept 14 (ANTARA) - The British government fully supports Papua's integration with the Unitary State of Indonesian Republic (NKRI) and rejects secessionist efforts of any kind.

The statement was made by British Ambassador to Indonesia Martin Hatfull after a dialog with Papua Governor Barnabas Suebu here on Monday.

"The British government will remain supporting Papua's integration with NKRI," Hatfull said.

But he added that several issues related to social and political conditions in Papua should be improved and managed in an effort to accommodate the aspirations of the people in Indonesia's easternmost province.

Therefore, Hatfull said, the British government would also support the Indonesian government's commitment to holding peaceful dialogs with the people of Papua to find an effective solution to various problems in Papua.

He added his country would also support human rights enforcement in Papua.

The desire of the Papuan people to secede from the Unitary State of Indonesian Republic to date was still voiced by several parties who were not satisfied with the history of Irian Barat's integration with Indonesia, especially with the result of a referendum in 1969.

In addition, various human rights violations in Papua continue to come up because of the absence of a government-sanctioned solution.

The issues discussed by the British envoy and the Papua governor were related to maintenance of Papua's integration with NKRI so that the ongoing development activities in the province could run optimally.

In the dialog, Hatfull said, various issues were discussed for the province's further development, especially about the regional economy.

Forest management in Papua to overcome global climate change was also discussed by Hatfull and Suebu because it had something to do with the Global Climate Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, scheduled to be organized in December this year.
