SAFARI GARDEN TO OBTAIN SIX AUSTRALIAN KANGAROOS
Bogor, Sept 14 (ANTARA) - The wildlife collection at the Cisarua Safari Garden in Bogor will soon be enriched with the arrival in the near future of six female grey kangaroos from Australia.
"The six kangaroos from Australia were initially expected to arrive before the Idul Fitri holidays this year but because of a transportation problem, they will do so after the Muslim festivity," Indonesian Safari Garden (TSI) spokesman Tony Sumampau said here on Monday.
Sumampau said the typically Australian animals that move around by jumping on their strong tails and hind legs were originally to be transported to Jakarta by a Malaysian Airlines jumbo jet but because the aircraft was used for Idul Fitri purposes in Malaysia, the airline wanted to carry the kangaroos in a smaller plane.
"However, because it was not advisable to transport the animals by a smaller plane, the arrival of the Australian mammals at Cisarua Safari Garden has been postponed until after Idul Fitri," Sumampau said.
He said Indonesia would obtain the six Australian kangaroos based on a "sister-park" cooperation agreement between TSI and an Australian zoo managed by the late Steve Irwin, the crocodile hunter, and his wife Raines Irwin.
"So, it was the Australian side that had recommended the transfer of the kangaroos to Indonesia," said Sumampau, who is concurrently coordinator of the Indonesian Forum for Wildlife (Foksi).
Sumampau said the Forestry Ministry had permitted the entry of the kangaroos into Indonesia, and all relevant procedures had been followed in accordance with existing regulations.
He said the kangaroos from Australia would complement the collection of Papuan kangaroos already at the Cisarua Safari Garden.
The kangaroos from Papua are about 70 cm tall while those from Australia are taller, namely 1.8 meters.
Sumampau said when the kangaroos from Australia had arrived at Cisarua Safari Garden, they would give the park another special feature and increase its attraction for the public.
