Among the 30-BSE index stocks, 27 closed higher while
Bharti Airtel, Hind Unilever and ONGC fell on profit selling
by funds and retail investors.
As the buying activity spread over a wide-front, the
small-cap and mid-cap shares gained over 1 per cent on fairly
heavy buying interest from general investors.
However, Asian indices ended narrowly mixed after opening
firm. European markets also showed a mixed trend in their
afternoon trade.
The realty sector index gained the maximu
m by 3.91 per
cent to 4,378.11 as shares of DLF Ltd, the biggest real estate
developer, jumped 5.57 per cent after losing 10 per cent in
the previous five trading sessions. All the 14 segments were
in positive zone.
The Metal sector index was second best performer by
adding 3.74 per cent to 13,942.19 as Sterlite Industries rose
3.49 per cent to Rs 744.55 and Hindalco Industries, the
biggest aluminum producer, by 3.26 per cent to Rs 125.05 on
reports of the base-metal prices rose in overseas markets.
The copper on the London Metal Exchange climbed 0.7 per
cent to 6,180 dollar a ton, aluminum by 0.3 per cent to 1,840
dollar and zinc 1 per cent to 1,850 dollar.
The bank index rose by 2.50 per cent to 9,178.91, auto by
2.33 per cent to 6,234.94, capital goods by 1.49 per cent to
13,395.06, power by 1.43 per cent to 2,998.92, consumer
durable by 1.41 per cent to 3,385.77, FMCG by 1.21 per cent to
2,536.18, oil and gas by 1.05 per cent to 10,367.41 and IT by
1.03 per cent to 4,399.10. PTI RS
