Powell, Gay to take part in int`l competition in Daegu next month
SEOUL, Sept. 16 (Yonhap) -- Top sprinters Asafa Powell of Jamaica and Tyson Gay
of the United States will compete in the upcoming track and field competition in
South Korea's southern city of Daegu next month, the event's organizers said
Wednesday.
"We received definite answers from Gay and Powell that they will take part in the
event," said Moon Dong-hoo, vice president of the organizing committee for the
2011 Daegu World Championships. The competition had shed some of the initial
excitement when world champion Usain Bolt pulled out.
The Daegu Pre-Championship Meeting, a one-day prelude to the 2011 world athletics
championships to be held in the same city in 2011, will open on Sept. 25.
The American runner, who claimed gold in the 100 meter event in the 2007 world
championships, finished runner-up in the 2009 Berlin event to world record holder
Bolt.
Bolt's compatriot Powell has held the world record of 9.72 seconds before Bolt
emerged with a series of stunning world records, including the recent 9.58
seconds.
American Carmelita Jeter who won bronze in Berlin will compete in the women's 100
meter event in Daegu, and three-time champion Allyson Felix and Jamaica's
Veronica Campbell-Brown, Beijing Olympic gold medalist, will duel over the
women's 200 meter title.
