BEI INDEX OPENS HIGHER ON BANK SHARE GAINS
Jakarta, Sept. 17 (ANTARA) - The Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) here on Thursday morning got off to a strong start as investors bought small-cap shares, especially bank shares.
The BEI index went up 22.791 points or 0.91 percent to 2,460.85 points, and the LQ-45 index jumped 5.623 points or 1.18 percent to 482.151 points.
Investors hunted bank shares attracted by their low prices, prompting the Indonesian stocks to gain, Farial Anwar, a capital market observer, said.
He predicted that the BEI index might move upward further until it would reach the level of 2,500 points, because of the growing positive sentiment in the capital market and the foreign capital inflow.
Besides, the strengthening of the rupiah against the US dollar boosted investors' optimism over the country's capital market growth, he said.
However, Anwar was worried that the rallies over the last five days would encourage investors to make profit-taking moves.
Bank BCA shares went up Rp150 to Rp4,500, BRI shares rose Rp125 to 7,800, Bank Danamon shares advanced Rp75 to Rp4,550, Astra International shares gained Rp550 to Rp33,450, Astra Agro Lestari shares went up Rp250 to Rp21,200 and Indosat shares climbed Rp75 to Rp5,400.
Meanwhile, the rupiah continued to strengthen in the Jakarta interbank spot market here on Thursday morning as demand for the local currency was high in the runup to the Idul Fitri Islamic festivities.
The local unit traded Rp9,580-Rp9,600 per US dollar, up 110 points from Rp9,690-Rp9,700 per US dollar at the market's close a day earlier. ***
