JAYAPURA COCONUT SHELL TRADERS DOING GOOD BUSINESS

Jayapura, Indonesia, Sept 9 (ANTARA) - Coconut shell traders in Jayapura are making fortunes selling the commodity as demand has soared ahead of the 1430 Hijriah Idul Fitri holidays.

On Kotaraja road, coconut shell traders who offer their goods in big and small packs are the most visited by people in need of the shells.

"One small package is sold for Rp5.000 and a big one for Rp10.000," said one of the traders, Asep, Friday.

He said the profit he had reaped during the past week was very satisfactory as there was high demand for the shells.

"On one day, I am able to earn three times the amount on ordinary days," he said.

Hasna, one of Asep's coconut shell customers, said it was a tradition for her family to buy the shells and use them as fuel to roast fish and chicken for the holiday meals.

"That is why I bought four large sacks," she said.

On regular days, coconut shell traders are usually found only at traditional markets such as Youtefa and Hanadi , but in the runup to the holidays, they have set up shop on the sidewalks of many streets in Jayapura. ***
