BI : NO SIGNS OF RISING INFLATION AHEAD OF IDUL FITRI
Jakarta, Sept 18 (ANTARA) - Bank Indonesia (BI) Senior Deputy Governor Darmin Nasution said there were no indications so far that inflation was rising ahead of the Idul Fitri holidays (September 20-22).
"It is normal for the prices of one or two commdities to rise ahead of the holidays. But this is not a reflection of the prices of goods in general, only of one or two commodities," he said before attending a working meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR).
He said people should not worry, if the prices of only one or two commodities rise because of a shortage in supply.
"Do not be worried because if the supply rises the price will be back to normal. So, there are no indications that inflation will worsen or rise in the days ahead, including during the Lebaran holidays," he said.
Darmin said he was optimistic that inflation would still meet the target of six plus or minus one percent or five percent.
"Not only will it reach the target, it may also reach a level below the target. The target of six plus or minus one percent can also mean five percent. I believe it can still reach four percent," he said.
Regarding fears about inflation resulting from massive distribution of newly issued Rp2000 bills by the central bank, Darmin said they were based only on speculation.
"What is the indicator. Do not just guess. If distribution of the Rp2,000 bills translates into inflation, the inflation rate will clearly rise ahead of the holidays, but it is not happening," he said.
Finance Minister Sri Mulyani had said earlier that the government and Bank Indonesia were continuously monitoring the possibility of a rise in inflation.
She said optimism over economic recovery would usually be followed by price movements so that expectations of inflation would also rise.
Besides, the steep rise in money printing across the world would also result in upward trend in inflation, she said.
"These two factors need to be closely watched when we refer to o inflation," she said. ***
