W SUMATRA SIGNS MOU WITH JAPANESE COMPANY
Padang, Indonesia, Sept 18 (ANTARA) - The West Sumatra Marine and Fisheries Agency signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Japan's Makino Suisan Pte Ltd.
Signing for Indonesia in Padang Friday night was head of the West Sumatra marine and fisheries agency Yosmeri, and signing for Japanese side was Toshihiko Makino, director of Makino Suisan.
Yosmeri said the Japanese company has introduced a new method in fishing operation using a fleet of boats.
"The cooperation was aimed at maximizing their tuna fish catch of international quality for the benefit of small fishermen and the regional economy," Yosmeri.
He said the substance of the cooperation was technology transfer from Makino Suisan to the small fishermen in West Sumatra with the fish catch favorable to the local fishermen, producers and sellers all at the same time.
"The W Sumatra marine and fisheries agency was merely acting as facilitator, while Makino Suisan as owner of the technology and fish buyer and importer," he said.
Right now, Yosmeri said, the Japanese company is building new style and bigger rumpons (fish traps) which had been tried and tested in India and the Philippines.
The rumpons measuring 20 by 35 meters are placed in a depth of 2,000 to 3,000 meters outside Mentawai islands.
"The rumpons will have resting places for the 100 fishermen, who will also have 50 small boats for catching tuna fish," Yosmeri.
He said each rumpon costs Rp750 million, which will be provided by Makino Suisan.
He said that as a center for the landing tuna fishermen in western Indonesia, the W Sumatra waters are frequently visited by ships from Muara Baru for fishing.
"For the time being, the small fishermen in W Sumatra were still unable to catch tuna, and this time investment will be beneficial to the fishermen in these parts," Yosmeri said.
In the meantime, Makino Suisan's foreign affairs director Toni said the MoU will be beneficial for both the fishermen in W Sumatra and Makino Suisan.
He also said W Sumatra is rife with tuna fish, but the local fishermen were not yet able to catch them.
Toni also said that investment in W Sumatra was more effective than those in other countries.
"In W Sumatra we can use local infrastructure, such as in building boats we could use wood from Mentawai," he said. ***
