September 22 is Day of Languages of Kazakhstan’s people

Almaty, September 19, 2009, Khabar - Journalists and officials of leading printed editions, radio, TV channels and informational agencies have taken part in language competition organized by “Arna Media” holding. Eight teams had to demonstrate their good knowledge of Kazakh, Russian and English languages and knowledge of proverbs, riddles, songs and poems. The competition also included contest for the best national costumes and dishes. The Kazakh, Russian, Ukrainian, German, Korean and Uzbek people have taken part in competition. Teams of “Kazinform” and “Khabar” agencies took the first place, “Kazteleradio” company held second place and “Kazakhstanskaya Pravda” newspaper took the third place.

Yelizaveta Veronchuk, editor-translator of English editorship of “Kazinform”:
- I learned the Kazakh language at school and I think every citizen of Kazakhstan must know the language of country in which he lives. The competition gives us wonderful opportunity to demonstrate our skills and talents and develop them and to be the model for others.

Berik Abdygaliyev, director of Presidential Fund of development of state language:
- Currently much depends on journalists and on their position, including the journalists who write in Russian. Unfortunately, there is little material about Kazakh language written in Russian, about the campaigns, actions and some new projects which are realized in this sphere. That’s why it is important to involve journalists of Kazakh and Russian editorships into these projects. And they will make people to learn the Kazakh language.
