India to oppose protection in trade in G-20 summit
New Delhi, Sep 19 (PTI) India will oppose all types of
protectionism in trade and financial inflows to developing
countries in the G-20 Summit next week when it considers
measures to bring global economy out of the current crisis.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will lead the
country's delegation to the multilateral summit on September
24-25 in Pittsburgh in the US which will also include Deputy
Chairman of the Planning Commission of India Montek Singh
Ahluwalia, who will also be the Sherpa, and Indian National
Security Advisor M K Narayanan.
Briefing reporters on the visit, Indian Foreign
Secretary Nirupama Rao said India will also advocate reforms
of the international financial institutions like World Bank
and Internal Monetary Fund to keep pace with the ground
realities of the changing world.
Along with these issues, reforms of the global
governance institutions such as UN Security Council will
figure in the summit that will be attended by the US President
Brack Obama and other world leaders and in the current
session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Indian External Affairs Minister S M Krishna will be
heading the Indian delegation to the UNGA which the Prime
Minister is not attending this year. (More) PTI
