QUAKE CAUSES CRACK IN HUNDREDS OF HOUSES IN W SUMATRA

Padang, W Sumatra, Sept 20 (ANTARA) - Hundreds of houses at two villages in West Pasamanan, West Sumatra, had crack in their walls after a magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit the area on Saturday.

"The two quake-hit villages are Rao and Cubadak," said the coordinator of the local natural disaster mitigation board (Satkorlak), Ade Edwar, on Sunday.

He said that the epicenter of the quake which struck at 17.50 local time was located at 0.70 degrees northern latitude and 99.01 degrees western longitude, or 42 km from Panyabungan, North Sumatra, at a depth of 10 km.

"Actually, the quake was not big. But because the quake was centered on land and shallow it caused a crack in the walls of hundreds of houses," he said.

The residents of the two villages were running scared after their houses were hit by the quake, Ade said.

"But the local government acted quickly to calm down the residents," he said.
