Samsung Electronics 10th corporate climate leader globally
SEOUL, Sept. 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. said Monday it
has ranked 10th among 500 global corporations in its efforts to tackle climate
change.
The company was rated the 10th-best firm in terms of the level and quality of its
disclosure and reporting on greenhouse gas emissions and climate change strategy
data, Samsung said, citing this year's Carbon Disclosure Project Financial Times
Stock Exchange 500 Report.
The Carbon Disclosure Project, founded in 2000, collects key climate change data
from some 2,500 major corporations around the globe to assemble the largest
corporate greenhouse gas emissions database in the world. It released the list of
companies leading in carbon disclosure (CDLI) for 2009 on Sunday.
The Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE) 500 consists of the 500 largest market
cap NASDAQ companies.
"CDLI selects only 50 companies, which were estimated to be the highest 10
percent among the FTSE 500 global companies," said Samsung Electronics in an
emailed statement. "A company being on the list shows the fact that it is coping
well with the climate change."
Samsung said it topped Asian companies on the chart and was fourth among
information technology firms, following Cisco Systems Inc., HP Development
Company, L.P. and EMC Corp.
The electronics giant announced in July it will invest 5.4 trillion won (US$4.3
billion) on research and development to transform itself into a leader in
eco-friendly management by 2013.
