S. Korea, U.S. agree to work closely to resume six-party talks
By Tony Chang
SEOUL, Sept. 22 (Yonhap) -- South Korean Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan and his
U.S. counterpart Hillary Clinton agreed to work closely to resume the stalled
multilateral negotiations aimed at denuclearizing North Korea, the government
said Tuesday.
The two met on the sidelines of the 64th United Nations General Assembly in New
York on Monday (local time) and reaffirmed the countries' commitment to ending
North Korea's nuclear program, the foreign ministry said.
Yu and Clinton agreed to cooperate with other involved partners to revive the
suspended six-party talks, which the North has boycotted, claiming the forum has
been used to infringe upon its sovereign right to develop nuclear and space
technology.
The multilateral negotiations involve the two Koreas, the U.S., China, Japan and
Russia.
Yu and Clinton also reaffirmed their governments' implementation of the U.N.
Security Council's sanctions on North Korea while also keeping the door open to
the North for dialogue, the ministry said.
The top diplomats discussed strengthening the two nations' alliance and promised
to seek a fruitful outcome at the upcoming G-20 summit to be held later this week
in Pittsburgh, the ministry said.
