Seoul likely to host next G-20 summit in 2010: official
By Byun Duk-kun
NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will likely host the next round of the Group of 20 countries aimed at tackling the ongoing global economic crisis, a South Korean official said Wednesday. The 20-nation forum is expected to have clout in global governance beyond the current crisis.
"The host city of the next G-20 summit will be decided at the third meeting to be
held in Pittsburgh on Friday, but South Korea is one of the strongest candidates
as of now," the official told reporters, asking not to be identified.
The G20 summit was established late last year in the face of the worst recession
in decades. Seoul assumes the chairmanship of the annual G20 finance ministerial
meeting next year.
Britain, which hosted the G20 summit in London in April, is this year's
chaircountry for the G20 finance ministerial meeting.
A fourth meeting of the G-20 summit, if any, will be a significant development as
it can be seen as a movement toward institutionalization of the forum, whose
member economies represent about 85 percent of the global product.
"We believe many countries support a Seoul meeting of the summit because the
country is showing the earliest signs of a recovery from the economic crisis in
the world under President Lee's leadership," the official said.
China was the first country to publicly support a Seoul meeting of the forum as
President Hu Jintao expressed deep satisfaction with the level of cooperation
between Seoul and Beijing at a summit here with his South Korean counterpart
earlier Wednesday.
"It will truly be a diplomatic triumph if we are in fact named the host city,"
the official said.
Lee will head to Pittsburgh on Thursday for the G-20 summit, which will also be
attended by Hu, U.S. President Barack Obama and leaders of 17 other advanced and
developing economies.
