Korea's seaport handling volume declines in August amid economic slump
SEOUL, Sept. 24 (Yonhap) -- The volume of shipments processed at South Korea's
trading seaports fell 6.9 percent in August from a year earlier amid a global
economic slowdown, a report showed Thursday.
According to the report by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs,
the volume of shipments handled at the nation's seaports amounted to 88.73
million tons in August, compared with 95.35 million tons a year earlier.
The declining pace, however, seems to be slowing down. In July, the handling
volume shrank 10.8 percent compared with a year earlier.
Busan, the nation's largest port city, saw its handling volume drop 12.3 percent,
while Incheon and Ulsan posted contractions of 8 percent and 8.8 percent,
respectively, the report showed.
