BANTEN TO HOST INTERNATIONAL YOUTH CONFERENCE
Jakarta, Sept 24 (ANTARA) - Banten province is to host an International Youth Conference from September 26 to October 2, 2009, Arief Rachman, Executive Chairman of the Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO (KNIU), said here on Thursday.
"The KNIU and UNESCO in cooperation with the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs will organize the international conference," Arief Rachman said.
He said about 170 participants from various countries would participate in the event.
According to Arief Rachman, KNIU and UNESCO would decide the theme and sub theme of the conference while the technical organization would be left to the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs.
He said the theme of the conference this year was "The Role of Youth to Establish Peace Toward a World without Violent Radicalization."
The conference this year would be a follow up to a similar event in Bahrain last year and is expected to be an opportunity for the participants to exchange information, experience, and knowledge in an effort to reduce and prevent youth violence.
"It is undeniable that the violence experienced or even committed by the youth around the world is a challenge to all parties concerned," Arief Rachman said.
He said some 70 participants from 28 countries have enrolled while the participants from Indonesia were predicted to reach around 100 people, representing various youth organizations and universities at home.
Arief Rachman said Banten was chosen to host the conference because it was a developing province with a long history.
"UNESCO suggests that the conference not be held in Jakarta or Bali but in Banten," Arief Rachman said.***
