HOME-BOUND TRAVELERS COMPLAIN MUCH ABOUT TRAIN TRANSPORTATION
Banyuwangi, Indonesia, Sept 24 (ANTARA) - Transportation minister Jusman Syafii Djamal said that home-found travelers in this year's Idul Fitri holiday mostly complained about train transportation compared with the sea and air means of transportation.
"The complaints which most travelers reported are the delayed schedules of arrivals and departures, apart from the lacking of coaches for passengers provided by the railway company PT KAI," he said after conducting an impromptu inspection at the Ketapang port, Thursday.
The minister said that the railway company actually had increased the number of coaches, but the increase was not enough due to the high increase number of passengers.
According to him, the high increase in the number of passengers had caused the delay arrivals and departures of the trains.
"Most of home-bound travelers choose the trains due to the low fares especially for the economic class," he said.
In the meantime, public relations officer at the railway company PT KAI's Jakarta regional operation I, Sugeng Priyono, said on Monday that the number of home-bound people traveling by train in this year's Idul Fitri holiday season rose by 3 percent from a year earlier.
The increase suggested that trains remained much-sought public transportation mode, he said.
He said the number of home-bound travelers by train reached a peak two days ahead of the post-fasting festivity on Friday when their number would reach more than 65,000 compared to last last years 55,000.
'To cater to the rising number of passengers, the company operated six extra trains, bringing to 40 the number of trains serving home-bound travelers in this year's idul Fitri holiday season, he said.
The state railway company said earlier it offered cheaper tickets for home-bound travelers starting Sept 14. ***
