BALI TO SEE ROTATING POWER CUTS IN TWO MONTHS' TIME

Denpasar, Bali, Sept 24 (ANTARA) - Households in Bali province will see rotating power cuts in the next two months because of repair work at the gas-fueled power plant (PLTG) Gilimanuk, a spokesman said.

"The rotating power cuts will last from October 10 to December 6. The repair work at PLTG Gilimanuk is part of maintenance work after the machines at the PLTG Gilimanuk have been operating at a standard time of 24,000 hours," distribution manager of the Bali office of state electricity company PT PLN Tagor Sijabat said after a hearing with local councilors here on Thursday.

The 130-megawatt power plant needs maintenance, or it will ran into trouble, he said.

He said the company had set a timetable for rotating blackouts in which each PLN subscribers will experience power cuts four to six times a month.

"Each of the power cuts will last a maximum of six hours per day starting from 06.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. All the 740,000 PLN subscribers in Bali will see rotating power cuts," he said.

To reduce the number of blackouts, each subscribers in the resort island should use electrical energy as efficiently as possible by reducing power consumption by up to 100 watts, he said.

"They can do that by turning off two to three lights or not ironing clothes at night. If each subscriber is able to reduce their power consumption by up to 100 watts a day, power reserves will reach 74 megawatts to reduce the number of blackouts," he said.

The rotating power cuts are also intended to anticipate total blackouts in the resort island, he said.
