KPK CHAIRMEN TO MEET WITH TEAM OF FIVE
Jakarta, Sept 24 (ANTARA) - The remaining chairmen of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will meet with the team of five on Friday, head of KPK's legal bureau Khaidir Ramly said here on Thursday.
"Tomorrow Pak Jasin and the other would meet at 2pm with the team of five," he said.
He did not tell where the meeting would be held or what they would discuss in the meeting in detail.
He only said that the KPK chairmen would tell the team of five that anyone to be chosen as KPK chairmen could face criminalization like what KPK chairmen Chandra M Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto experienced.
"We will tell them whoever will be in the KPK chairmanship may face possible criminalization so we will seek an explanation," he said.
He said if criminalization of KPK leadership was allowed it could affect other KPK leaders.
As has been reported President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono recently issued a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) for appointing acting chairmen to fill vacancies in the KPK.
The head of state deemed it necessary to issue the Perppu
because he considered KPK would not be able to function well if it was only led by two people.
KPK is currently manned by two chairmen after three other chairmen were named suspects by the police.
To select the acting chairmen to fill the posts of the three the President formed a team of five consisting of coordinating minister for political, security and legal affairs Widodo AS, minister of justice and human rights Andi Mattalatta, presidential adviser Adnan Buyung Nasution, senior lawyer Todung Mulya Lubis and former KPK chief Taufiequrrahman Ruki.
Several quarters had opposed the president's decision including the Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) who considered the Perppu and the team of five potential to interfere the anti graft body.
"We reject because its content and substance is threatening KPK's independence," ICW researcher Febri Diyansyah said.
Febri said the team of five could easily interfere and finally choose persons who would benefit certain parties particularly the ruler.
"The team may not be allowed to choose persons who are predicted to submit to and be influenced by the President," Febri said.
Febri said it would be better if the President reviewed the police's decision to name the KPK chairmen suspects than creating the Perppu polemic performance. Febri said the legal process by the police was full of interests and violations of procedures.
On a separate occasion a member of the team of five Adnan Buyung Nasution assured that the team would work objectively.
"Basically the team acts as a filter for the implementation of Perppu which has become a polemic among the public," he said.
He said the President had already signed it and therefore he had formed the team of five to assure objectivity with regard to the selection of the acting KPK chairmen.
"The President could not directly appoint them because it would violate principles of democracy," he said, adding he had given the input to the president.
Adnan said the team would choose persons who are firm, open, courageous and independent as well as clean and having good track records.
The team would work for a week as of Thursday for selecting the persons.
