RI NEEDS EFFECTIVE CULTURAL PROGRAMS: UNESCO

Jakarta, Sept 24 (ANTARA) - Indonesia needs effective cultural programs to prevent other countries from laying claim to its cultural heritage, a UNESCO official said.

"Indonesia has no law on cultural affairs so that other nations can easily lay claim to its cultural heritage," Executive Chairman of the Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO Prof. Dr. H. Arief Rachman, M.PD said here on Thursday.

UNESCO was currently waiting for data on intangible and tangible cultural heritage from the Indonesian Tourism and Culture Ministry, he said.

"As a matter of fact, cultural and sports events can encourage Indonesian youths to divert their energy to more positive activities so that violence against and by youths can be scaled down," he said.

UNESCO had a so-called "cultural diversity development" program adopted at a youth international conference held in Bahrain in 2008, he said.

Similar conference would be held in Banten province on September 29-October 2, he said.

The four-day conference would indirectly serve as a venue to show off the Indonesian culture to other nations, he said.

"We can take advantage of this conference to show off our cultural works such as "angklung" musical instrument to which other nation has once laid claim," he said.

The Banten conference will be themed "The Role of Youth to Establish Peace Toward a Future World without Violent Radicalization".

Hopefully, the conference which will bring together 170 youths from various countries will serve as a venue to exchange information, experience and knowledge among participants to reduce and prevent acts of violence involving youths.***5***
