MEET-INDOPAK 2 LST

While Congress is represented by Anil Shastri and K
Suresh, BJP's Vijay Jolly and Pinky Anand, Janata Dal-United's
Devendra Tyagi and Hari Kishore Singh, Communist Party of
India-Marxist (CPI-M)'s Mohammad Salim and Communist Party of
India (CPI)'s Shameem Faizee and Ismail Kundukad Ebrahim are
also participating in the conference.

In his address, Shastri said that despite many Asian
countries steadily recovering from the global recession, the
greatest challenge facing the region is terrorism.

"We (the Congress) would support any initiative taken by
any member country of ICAPP to fight the menace. I agree that
some of the ills of terrorism are part of history which we
have inherited," he said.

The main theme of the general assembly is "Towards an
Asian Century" with three sub-themes of regionalism driven by
energy and economy; promoting reconciliation and
rapprochement; and combating radicalism.

The ICAPP was set up in September, 2000 to serve as a
platform for exchange and dialogue among Asian political
parties and organisations. It is aimed at strengthening
exchange and cooperation between Asian political parties,
enhancing mutual understanding between Asian governments and
peoples, pushing forward regional cooperation and creating a
favourable environment for lasting peace and common prosperity
in the region.

Since its establishment, the ICAPP has held four
conferences in Manila, Bangkok, Beijing and Seoul. PTI ZMN
