Asian meet calls for resumption of Indo-Pak talks
Zafri Mudasser Nofil
Astana, Sept 25 (PTI) India and Pakistan should resume
the stalled composite dailogue to resolve issues like Kashmir
in a bid to "calm the off-and-on tensions" on their borders, a
key member of a grouping of Asia's major political parties
said Friday.
"On Kashmir, there has been no apparent movement since
July, when the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan met in
Egypt. Understandably, the Indians are still aggrieved over
last November's terrorist attacks in Mumbai," said Jose de
Venecia, co-chairman of standing committee of International
Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP).
Addressing the 5th General Assembly of the ICAPP, he said
he believed that the Congress achieving a thumping win in the
May general elections should give India popular support in
seeking a modus vivendi with the ruling PPP in Pakistan.
"Such an agreement could be supported by (Pakistan's)
opposition party -– the Pakistan Muslim League (N)."
Velencia said that the ICAPP should "encourage both the
Congress and PPP to help revive the suspended talks over
Kashmir to calm the off-and-on tensions on the long borders of
south Asia".
Hosted by Kazakhstan's biggest political party - People's
Democratic Party (PDP) or Nur Otan, leaders of Asia's major
political parties, including those from Congress party,
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Left, are participating in
the meet that was officially inaugurated Friday. More PTI ZMN
