Gold offered to Kashi Vishwanath temple melted
Varanasi, Sep 25 (PTI) Over six kilograms gold offered at
the world famous Kashi Vishwanath temple and kept in it's safe
has been melted into a brick, temple sources said Friday.
Pandit Harihar Kripalu Tripathi, Chairman of Shri Kashi
Vishwanath Temple Trust said that amidst tight security
arrangements, the gold of the temple, kept in treasury of the
district administration and in the temple's safe, was taken to
the workshop of a goldsmith Thursday and melted.
Tripathi said that 2,562 grams gold was taken from the
treasury, which became 2,557.3 grams after being melted.
The gold donated to temple and stored in the safe was
3,828 grams in quantity and after melting, it was reduced to
3,579.340 grams, he said adding that the gold melted also
included the gold recovered from the thieves in the 80s.
ADM (Law and Order) AK Pandey, who is also the chief
executive officer of the temple said, "The gold would be
deposited in SBI for five years and the bank would give an
annual interest of 1.5 per cent to the temple." PTI IKD
