KALLA TO SUPPORT CANDIDATE WHO CAN IMPROVE GOLKAR PARTY

Makassar, Indonesia, Sept 26 (ANTARA) - Golkar Party chairman Jusuf Kalla who is concurrently vice president said he would support a candidate who has the capability to improve the party and make it progress in the future.

"I will support a candidate who can lead Golkar towards a better future," the vice president said after dedicating an Indonesian Communion of Churches (PGI) building here on Saturday.

Asked who of the current candidates for Golkar Party chairman he would support, Kalla said all the existing candidates appeared to be good and capable of improving the party, and therefore he would leave the final choice to the party's national conference in Pekanbaru, Riau, on October 4, 2009.

Arriving at Sultan Hasanuddin Airport here on Saturday morning, Kalla met Golkar Advisory Board chairman Surya Paloh who had just staged a campaign in Makassar and was about to leave for Pontianak, West Kalimantan.

Asked if his encounter with Surya Paloh was a kind of support, Kalla said the meeting between him and Paloh was nothing extraordinary.

"It was just a chance meeting , and there was nothing special about it because I also met other candidates such as Aburizal Bakrie, Tommy Soeharto, and Yuddy Chrisnandy," Kalla said.

Kalla said in his short meeting with Surya Paloh at Hasanuddin airport, he asked about the latter's trip from Papua to Makassar and the support Paloh had gained.

Meanwhile, Surya Paloh said during a flight from Makassar to Pontianak that he did not discuss anything special with the party leader Jusuf Kalla.

"I happened to meet Pak Jusuf Kalla at Hasanuddin airport but we did not talk about anything special," Surya Paloh said.

Paloh admitted he had met and greeted Kalla at the airport but they did not talk about anything special.

Asked if during the encounter, Jusuf Kalla had said something signaling support for his (Paloh's) bid to become Golkar Party chairman, Paloh said Kalla should be neutral.

"I hope that Kalla as Golkar Party chairman will be neutral and accommodate all cadres," Paloh said, adding that although they had not talked about anything special, he understood Kalla's feelings because they had known each other for five years.***
