SURYA PALOH CONTINUES SEEKING SUPPORT FOR PARTY CHIEF BID

Semarang, Indonesia, Sept 26 (ANTARA) - Golkar Party Advisory Board Chairman Surya Paloh is continuing to seek support for his bid to win the election of a new party leader next week.

He met with thousands of supporters from across Java in a rally in Semarang, Central Java, on Saturday.

On the occasion, a sub-disrict party leader called for all regional and district board members in Central Java to support Surya Paloh in the race to be held at a party conference in Pekanbaru on October 4-5.

The chairman of the Blora district executive board, Yudi Sancoyo, made the same call, saying "the Golkar Party must be led by the right person."
The chairman of the organizing committee for the event, Harry Afandi, said the event was attended by representatives from all regional executive boards from across Java, namely Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Yogyakarta, East Java and Central Java.

The event was a continuation of a series of mobilization efforts done before in Jayapura, Makassar and Pontianak so far.

Golkar which used to be the biggest party in the country was defeated by the Democratic Party to rank second in the legislative election in April while its presidential candidate, Jusuf Kalla, who is the party's chairman was also beaten in the race in July by incumbent president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono from the Democratic Party.

In the election of Golkar Party leader Surya Paloh would compete with Aburizal Bakrie, Yuddy Chrisnandi and Tommy Soeharto. Surya Paloh Aburizal Bakrie and Tommy Soeharto are business tycoons while Yuddy Chrisnandi is currently an associate chairman of the party. ***
