VP CALLS FOR CORRECT UNDERSTANDING OF RELIGIOUS GREETINGS
Makassar, Indonesia, Sept 26 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla called on all religious followers to develop understanding regarding the meaning of religious greetings made in their daily life.
"Actually 'assalamu alaikum' and 'syalom' have the same meaning and so does "om swastiastu", namely peace and safety. All religions always pray for peace for their followers," he said before church members here on Saturday.
He said it was the task of all as religious followers to straighten out the meaning of the "Assalamu Alaikum" and "Syalom" greetings.
Kalla, who is also chairman of the Communication Forum of Inter-Religious Followers (FKAUB), also asked all religious figures to conduct their daily activities without carrying their religions, which was potential to cause conflict.
"Conflicts that happened in Poso and Maluku were actually not inter-religious conflicts but problems in which religions were used as an instrument to fuel conflicts," he said.
Based on the experience therefore he appealed to all relgious figures to set up inter-relgious forums so that "Assalamu Alaikum" and "Syalom" could be used correctly.
South Sulawesi Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo meanwhile thanked all Christians grouped in the South, West and Southeast Sulawesi PGI for their support for development efforts in the region so far.
He expressed the hope that inter-religious tolerance could be continuously maintained to ensure peace for supporting development.
On the occasion, the PGI expressed appreciation for Jusuf Kalla calling him a reconciliation pioneer.
The chairman of the PGI executive board, Paul Pantanduk, expressed the appreciation when receiving the vice president and his entourage for the inauguration of a PGI building.
"This historical building is inseparable from the process of peace making in the region because it was here that the Forum of Inter-Religious Brotherhood was established on June 8, 1999," he said.***
