KALLA PIONEER OF NATIONAL RECONCILIATION :PGI
Makassar, Indonesia, Sept 26 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Communion of Churches (PGI) is proud to have a leader like vice president HM Jusuf Kalla who is known as a national reconciliation figure, PGI executive council chairman Paul Pantanduk said.
He made the statement when receiving vice president Jusuf Kalla and entourage to dedicate the PGI Building for South, West and Southeast Sulawesi regions here on Saturday.
"The history of this building is inseparable from the process of peace making because it was here on June 8, 1999 that the Inter-Religious Brotherhood Forum (FAUB) was first established," Paul Pantanduk said before vice president Jusuf Kalla and wife Mrs Mufidah Jusuf Kalla as well as South Sulawesi governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo and Makassar mayor Ilham Arief Sirajuddin.
He said it was in the building that the declaration for the establishment of the forum and the appointment of Jusuf Kalla as its first chairman was read out.
FAUB which has now developed into an Communication Forum of Inter-Religious Followers (FKUB) was pioneered by HM Jusuf Kalla in 2003 who chose the PGI building for the first meeting of religious leaders and figures in Indonesia.
He said it was in this place that Kalla planned a meeting with Christians in Poso that led to the declaration of "Malino I" peace agreement.
The chairman of the executive board for South, West and Southeast Sulawesi regions, Andreas Siwalu, also praised Kalla's statemanship which had inspired Christians to maintain inter-religious tolerance.
"We will always remember HM Jusuf Kalla as a reconciliation figure," he said.
The South, West and Southeast Sulawesi PGI would support all the activities Kalla would do after his vice presidency. "We believe Kalla would continue to give his service after he was not a vice president," Andreas said.
The building on a 1,176 square meter plot of land was built in stages for 13 years, worth Rp1.8 billion from regional administrations (11 percent), contributions from individuals and community members (18 percent) and from churches in the regions (71 percent).***
