SPEAKER REPEATS REQUEST FOR BPK`S REPORT ON BANK CENTURY AUDIT

Jakarta, Sept 26 (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono on Saturday repeated his call on the State Audit Board (BPK) to submit the report on its investigative audit on the Bank Century bailout case to the House before September 30.

Speaking to the press, Laksono said he had actually made the same request to the BPK before Idul Fitri last September 20. "But until now, we have not yet received their report," he said.

He said, if the BPK could not yet present the complete report, the House would make with its preliminary report. "We hope the BPK can at least enlighten us on the legal basis for the government's decision to bail out the problematic bank," he said.

"So the House is now expecting the BPK to submit at least its preliminary report before September 30," he added.

Laksono explained the present members of the House would end their five-year term on September 30, 2009 and therefore they wanted to wrap up important or strategic business before they went.

The BPK was formally asked by the House to do an investigative audit on the Bank Century case based on the outome of a hearing between the House Commisssion XI, the finance minister, the Savings Insurance Institute (LPS) and the acting governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) last August 27.

The audit was deemed necessary as there was a widely held belief in society unlawful acts were committed in the Bank Century bailout.

Some of the specific questions the BPK was expected to bring to light were the legal basis for using a huge sum of state funds to rescue the bank, the process that led to the decision to bail out the bank, possible violations in the way in which the state's financial assistance was provided.

Directly inolved in the Bank Century bailout case are Bank Indonesia (the central bank), the finance ministry and the Savings Insurance Institute (LPS). ***
