KEPCO suffers loss from power supply to Kaesong park

SEOUL, Sept. 27 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's state-run power company suffered
billions of won in losses by providing electricity to South Korean companies
operating at an joint industrial park in North Korea at cheap prices, a report
showed Sunday.
According to the report submitted to the National Assembly, the Korea Electric
Power Corp. (KEPCO) had an accumulated loss of 18.2 billion won (US$15.4 million)
over the past five years.
KEPCO began to provide electricity to the joint industrial complex in the North's
border town of Kaesong in 2005.
Currently, more than 100 South Korean firms operate with about 40,000 North
Korean workers operate in the Kaesong complex, an outcome of the first
inter-Korean summit between then South Korean President Kim Dae-jung and North
Korean leader Kim Jong-il in 2000.
