KEPCO to spend 2.8 tln won on green technology

SEOUL, Sept. 27 (Yonhap) -- The state-run Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) said
Sunday it will spend 2.8 trillion won (US$2.36 billion) on "green" technology in
an effort to find new revenue sources and promote environmentally friendly energy
policies.

The spending will be focused on so-called smart grid technology, low-emission
power systems and other related areas, KEPCO said.
The smart grid is a revolutionary technology that incorporates IT into existing
power networks, making a two-way information exchange between suppliers and
consumers possible.
More importantly, it allows renewable energy sources to be integrated into the
existing network, contributing to carbon emission reduction.
KEPCO is South Korea's power monopoly, supplying 95 percent of its power needs.
