INDO-PAK-DIPLOMACY 2
The Obama Administration, which despite reservations
expressed by New Delhi and several powerful lawmakers, went
out of the way to pump in massive aid to Pakistan – both
military and non-military – now wants Islamabad to make sure
that it does nothing which results in regional instability. It
wants Pakistan to work in tandem with India to fight terror.
The Obama Administration also wants Pakistan to have one
policy against all types of terrorism. It is also believed to
have been asked by the US and Britain to give away decades-old
policy of using extremist organisations like Lashkar-e-Toiba
and Jaish-e-Mohammad, as a strategic leverage against India.
India, on the other hand, has refused to move away from
its stand, that action against 26/11 perpetrators would be its
barometer to Pakistan's real intention on talks and improving
bilateral relationship.
This was very much evident when Indian delegation led by
Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao met her Pakistani counterpart
Salman Bashir for two hours, during which Mumbai dominated the
proceedings while all other issues did crop up on sidelines.
Pakistan expressed its frustration when its officials
during several media interviews accused India of bringing the
talks to a standstill because of one investigation -- Mumbai.
Sensing that Pakistan wants to indulge in a public
rhetoric on the eve of a crucial meeting and thus seize an
opportunity to blame India for talks' failure,Indian diplomats
cancelled plans to make any pre-meeting media appearances.
Top Indian diplomats are believed to have prevailed over
India's External Affairs Minister S M Krishna to cancel his
pre-scheduled interview to Indian TV channels and other media
outlets as a precautionary exercise. (More) PTI LKJ
