Besides international pressure, the Pakistani leadership
is feeling the heat on the domestic front too – in particular
the Kashmir lobby, which has been camping here for the past
several days pressing on them to raise the issue during the
talks. Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also had a
meeting with Qureshi on Friday in this regard.
After the Foreign Secretary-level meeting, Pakistani
diplomats told the Kashmiri leadership that the issue was
raised and would be taken up during the meeting with Krishna
later Sunday night.
However, at this point of time, India does not seem to be
in any mood to talk on Kashmir or take any confidence building
measures, till the time Pakistan shows commitment in taking
real action – not symbolic -- against terrorists who plot and
execute attacks against India from its soil. This is what,
Krishna is expected to tell straight forward to Qureshi Sunday
night in mid-town Manhattan.
Krishna is expected to meet Qureshi along with their
respective Foreign Secretaries and other top diplomats and
also have one-on-one interaction for some time. The meeting is
scheduled to last for about 30 to 45 minutes, soon after which
Krishna is scheduled to brief the press. His Pakistani
counterpart, separately, too would address a press conference.
Given the way the talks between the Foreign Secretaries
took place, diplomats from both the countries said they were
not expecting any breakthrough in the Krishna-Qureshi meeting;
but if it goes well this could be quite a start of a
long-drawn peace talks between India and Pakistan – which the
