SURYA PALOH BUILDING STRONG SUPPORTS IN SUMATRA

Semarang, Indonesia, Sept 27 (ANTARA) - The chairman of Golkar Party's Advisory Board, Surya Paloh, built strong supports for his running for the party's leadership in Sumatra on Sunday.

Surya and his entourage left Semarang of Central Java for Padang of West Sumatra by a special aircraft in the company of his success team's members to garner more support from that province.

From Padang, he will process his flight to Palembang for similar activity, Jeffery Geovani, the leader of his success team, said here on Sunday.

Building more supports for his running for the party's leadership in the two cities is part of his political tour that may ease his step in competition during the party's congress in Pekanbaru, Riau province, next week.
He started his political tour to Jayapura, Papua and made the declaration of his running for the party's leadership at Cendrawasih Sports Hall in Jayapura, Papua, on Thursday before thousands of party cadres.

Surya Paloh decided to run for the post after listening to aspirations and receiving support from various regions.

At the declaration eight district chapters of Bali, seven district chapters of West Nusa Tenggara and 29 district chapters of Papua expressed their support to Surya Paloh.

All district chapters in Papua support Surya Paloh although the provincial chapter is supporting another candidate.

In their statement the district chapters said they had not any doubt about Surya Paloh's militancy as a party cadre because he had been a legislative assembly member to represent the party since he was 18 years old in North Sumatra.

In view of that they believed Surya Paloh was genuine party cadre that had made his way up from below deserved to be at the helm of the party for 2009-2014.

Surya Paloh expressed appreciation to the support. "The land of Cendrawasih (Papua) has given me a spirit and therefore I am ready to be a candidate," he said.

From the land of Cendrawasih, he said, he would run for the party's leadership and he believed he would be able to carry out the mandate if he was chosen.

He said support for his candidacy kept increasing as more and more district chapters had the courage to express their stance freely without fear of pressures or intimidations to support others.

"As an example all district chapters in Papua have shown their courage to express their stance and use their common sense," he said.

He said that all district chapters in Malaku had also expressed support for him while support from district chapters in Java has reached 75 percent and it kept increasing.

He said support from district chapters in Sumatra meanwhile reached 80 percent, adding he had also received big support from district chapters in Sulawesi and Kalimantan.

Surya Paloh said that Golkar Party was currently in the crossroad. The path to be taken will determine whether the party will progress or even die, he said.

"It will be the cadres who would determine its future and not others. Fourty-five years of experience must provide much lesson for the party," he said.

The Aburizal Bakrei's camp meanwhile claimed that support from Akbar Tanjung, Aburizal Bakrie and Agung Laksono continued to increase.

In connection with that the Association of Indonesia Development Employees (Gakpi) as an organization set up by Golkar has given special indoctrination to its members who are also Golkar cadres to safeguard the three.

"A special indoctrination event will be held in Musi Rawas, South Sumatra, for Gakpi forces and five buses will be made ready to carry supporters for the trio to Riau by land which is not far away from Musi Rawas," Gakpi's treasurer, Ridwan Mukti, who is a member of the success team for Aburizal, said.
