MOWEWE BIGGEST HONEY PRODUCER IN SE SULAWESI
Kendari, Indonesia, Sept 27 (ANTARA) - Several villages in Mowewe sub-district, Kolaka regency, South East Sulawesi, are still maintaining their position as biggest honey producers in South East Sulawesi.
The area's honey production reached 10-15 tons per month, but the problem is that the price of the product is often too low, an environmental NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) activist, Suhardin, said here Sunday.
He said that the honey produced in Mowewe subdistrict is very pure, because it is obtained from the habitat of the bees, which they collected form the threes in the Mekongga woods in South East Sulawesi.
Suhardin said that the honey is then supplied to collectors in Kolaka and Konawa regencies and Kendari at Rp50,000-Rp65,000 per bottle.
Then the traders sell the honey at Rp80,000 per bottle or even more, but some of the traders were also cheating by mixing the honey with sweeteners to increase their volume, he said.
Therefore he said that if people wanted to buy pure honey, they came to villages in Mowewe, also they have to cover distances of 20-30 kilometers from the regential capital.
Others got pure honey from Wowonii and Langara sub-districts, Konawe regency, and several other areas in North Buton.
The honey is sold in many places including supermarkets, gift shops, and mostly in large volumes.***
