SUKABUMI SHAKEN BY 5.5-MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE
Jakarta, Sept. 28 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale shook Sukabumi, West Java, on Monday at 7.26 am local time.
The earthquake's epicenter was located at 8.17 degrees southern latitude, 107.23 degrees eastern longitude, about 143 kilometers southeast of Sukabumi, West Java, and at a depth of 10 km below sea level, information from the National Meteorological, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) office said here on Monday.
The temblor did not have potential to trigger a subsequent tsunami the BMKG office said.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," the edge of a tectonic plate prone to seismic upheaval.
Last September 2, 2009, a 7.3-magnitude earthquake rocked West Java Province, and damaged at least 3,199 houses in Sukabumi city and district.
The powerful earthquake affected 16 districts in West Java, leaving 73 people dead and more than 600 others injured.
Some 1,959 houses were seriously damaged and 1,240 others slightly damaged, according to data collected by local military and police personnel, Lt. Col. Muhammad Yusuf, head of the Sukabumi disaster mitigation task force, said here on Thursday.
South Sukabumi was the worst hit by the earthquake which damaged at least 400 houses in Lengkong sub district.
In West Java, 54,171 houses were seriously damaged and 114,601 others were lightly damaged in the earthquake.
