Three S. Korean documentaries invited to Japanese fest
SEOUL, Sept. 28 (Yonhap) -- Three South Korean films, including a documentary featuring prostitutes in a U.S. military campside town in Korea, have been invited to Japan's upcoming Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival, a Seoul distributor said Monday.
"American Alley," directed by Kim Dong-ryung, has been invited to the biennial
fete's non-competition New Asian Currents section along with "The Fool Doesn't
Catch a Cold" by Kim Kyung-man, distributor Cinema Dal said in a press release.
Aimed at discovering and supporting promising Asian filmmakers, 19 films will be
screened in the section this year, the event's Web site said.
Kim Mi-re's "Weabak: Stayed Out Overnight" has been selected among the two
special invitation films for the New Asian Currents section.
Established to commemorate Japanese documentary master Shinsuke Ogawa, who was
born in the Yamagata region, fifteen films are up for competition in the Yamagata
film fest, which will run Oct. 8-15.
Female South Korean director Byun Young-joo's "The Murmuring" received the top
prize at the event in 1995.
