Heavy rain in the desert peninsula of Mangyshlak

Aktau, September 29, 2009 (Khabar) - 24 private cottages and six two-storey houses were flooded in the city of Fort-Shevchenko after a heavy rain. More than one hundred local residents are still unable to return to their homes. They were placed at their relatives and friends, two families temporarily housed in the building of the kindergarten. The residents of Fort Shevchenko had not seen such a downpour since 2001. Small canal that runs to the sea could not accommodate the flow of rainwater. One of the new micro districts of the city was flooded. Eyewitnesses say that the water level in the streets reached up to one meter. Roads are washed out, fences and some farm buildings are destroyed.
106 people and 60 vehicles participated in liquidating of consequences. The district administration created a commission, which already counts the damage from the raging disaster. Forecasters say it will be raining for the whole week. Therefore, the authorities want first of all to expand and deepen the spouting canal.

Serik Khairushev, head of the department for emergency situations in Mangistau region:
- Medical services, office of public safety, as well as food supply office, civil defense of Tupkaragan district took timely measures. People are not affected, and living facilities operate in normal mode.
