RI PRESIDENT ATTENDS HARVARD UNIVERSITY FORUM
Boston, Sept 28 (ANTARA) - Visiting Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono attended a Harvard University forum here on Monday to exchange views on how to improve a nation's quality.
At the forum, held at the Four Seasons Hotel, President Yudhoyono was accompanied among others by Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi, Indonesian Ambassador to the United States Sudjadnan Parnohadiningrat, presidential spokesmen Dino Patti Djalal and Andi Mallarangeng, Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) chairman Mohamad S. Hidayat, Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) chairman Muhammad Lutfi, and state oil company PT Pertamina Commissioner Gita Wirjawan.
Also present were experts from Harvard University, namely the dean of the John F. Kennedy School of Government Prof. David Ellwood, and other academics such as Prof. Joseph Nye, Prof. Graham Wilson, Prof. John Thomas and Prof. Dani Rodrik.
Before starting the discussion, Prof David Ellwood praised Indonesia for its success in making significant changes toward a better direction in its economic policies and other aspects.
Ellwood also made remarks in anticipation of the general lecture to be delivered by President Yudhoyono on Wednesday at the Harvard University campus in Boston, Massachusetts.
"We hope we can learn from Indonesia's outstanding achievements in various aspects and from the ways in which you (President Yudhoyono) were able to make them," Ellwood told Yudhoyono.
In response to Ellwood's remarks, Yudhoyono said Indonesia was at present actually in the process of reforming itself in various fields after undergoing the political and economic crises in 1998.
"We have actually made a lot of progress but at the same time we also face many challenges in the management of poverty and unemployment problems, and in how we can maintain and strengthen our democracy," the President said.
