GOVT TO PROVIDE RICE FOR THE POOR

Jakarta, Sept 28 (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission IV for food affairs and state-owned logistics firm Bulog have agreed to provide rice for the poor (raskin) for 17.5 million families in 2010, a legislator said.

"The raskin program will be allocated for 12 months with each of the targeted poor families tol get 15 kilogram rice," Bomer Pasaribu of Commission IV of the House said after a hearing with Bulog on Monday.

During the hearing, both sides also agreed a government-sanctioned purchase price of rice (HPP) at Rp5,913 per kg with a subsidy value of Rp4,313 per kg, he said.

The sale price was set at the initial rate of Rp1,600 per kg. "The shortage of subsidy would be covered in the 2010 revised budget," Pasaribu said.

It was earlier reported that the subsidy in the 2010 state budget was set at Rp11.655 trillion and the figure was believed only enough for rice subsidy until October, 2010.

Bomer Pasaribu admitted that although the House and Bulog had agreed to allocate raskin subsidy in the revised budget, there was still the possibility that the distribution of raskin would be delayed for two months at the end of 2010.
