US EXPERT BELIEVES PRESIDENT YUDHOYONO TO MAKE MORE PROGRESS
Boston, Sept 28 (ANTARA) - Strategic management expert Michael Porter of Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts, believed Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono would be able to make more progress in the 2009-2014 period.
"I am optimistic that Indonesia will be able to make good progress," Porter told newsmen at the Four Seasons Hotel here on Monday after speaking at a two-hour forum which was also attended by President Yudhoyono.
The forum, held to discuss the improvement of Indonesia's competitive power, was attended by representatives of the Indonesian government, private sector, and academics from Harvard University.
In the discussion, Porter explained the strategies for next priorities that President Yudhoyono's government should shoulder in the second period from 2009 to 2014.
The priorities Porter mentioned were improvement in provincial governments' effectivity, communication facilities, energy to produce electric power, and the war against corruption.
If those priorities were not managed well, Porter said, it would hamper Indonesia's national development and economic growth.
Porter said the priorities he mentioned were actually in accordance with President Youdhoyono's plans to step up Indonesia's competitive power and economic development.
"But cooperation between the government and private sector is also needed," Porter said, adding that although in the midst of various challenges, Indonesia was actually undergoing better economic development than many other countries.
"Its experience in the Asian crisis has made Indonesia stronger," Porter said.
On the occasion, President Yudhoyono was accompanied by Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi, Indonesian Ambassador to the United States Sudjadnan Parnohadiningrat, presidential spokesmen Dino Patti Djalal and Andi Mallarangeng, Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) chairman Mohamad S. Hidayat, Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) chairman Muhammad Lutfi, and state oil company PT Pertamina Commissioner Gita Wirjawan.
Also present were experts from Harvard University, namely the dean of the John F. Kennedy School of Government Prof. David Ellwood, and other academics such as Prof. Joseph Nye, Prof. Graham Wilson, Prof. John Thomas and Prof. Dani Rodrik.
